Abyss is the result of Zasalamel combining and absorbing Soul Edge and Soul Calibur into his body.

Zasalamel was waiting in the shadows until the time was right and activated a energy magnet, which can absorb any type of energy, including the two swords' energy. But this resulted in Zasalamel transforming into Abyss and not having any control over his actions.
